I didn’t always know that I am an empath. I never even heard the term until I watched Deanna Troi in Star Trek The Next Generation. Even then I didn’t identify with it because my senses don’t work like hers. I don’t focus on a person and instantly read their thoughts and emotions. Maybe if I learned how to control the gift I could do something similar. What I do is sense the emotions of other people, but I don’t always know whose emotions I am feeling. I have also felt the physical sensations of certain very close friends on a couple of occasions but those were rare occurrences.
My discovery began five years ago in 2012. Circumstances in my personal life coupled with challenges at my work threw me into a dark depression that I recognize spiritually as “The Dark Night Of The Soul.”
I can’t say for sure how long my dark night lasted. I don’t have any memories of that time. My life was a fog and I was a zombie. I can’t even say what pulled me back out of it, but finally, I did get free.
As I started to experience life again and do some research and reading online about some issues going on, I stumbled across an article titled, “30 Traits Of An Empath.” I’m a sucker for lists anyway, and this one hooked me from the start. There are many versions on the web, but here is where I found mine.
Quickly I found myself nodding as I identified with more and more of the items on the list. Overwhelmed in public places? Check. Seeing violence and tragedy in person or on TV is unbearable? Check. Knowing when someone is lying? Check. People, even strangers, are comfortable unloading their stories? Check. … And the list went on and on…
This began the journey to understand me …

Hello, I read with interest what is above. I have a friend that I lost contact with over 50 years ago but we were very close at younger ages. I could tell when things were happening to her and still can. I have read several lists on em-paths and can identify with about 98% of what is said. There are parts of my life I can’t recall do to things that happened but can tell a lot about others when I come in contact with them. Thanks for your writings. Blessings.
Hi Dan. Thank you for the comment! I’m glad you could identify with the words I’ve written. It is my hope that my words will help others like us know that they aren’t alone.
