What’s the deal with AI?

These days everything about AI is being pushed upon us. Social media wants us to use AI to answer our questions. Search engines want us to use AI to help us search.

We are encouraged to use AI to change up our photos or even create pictures of things that don’t actually exist. Or to write up a paragraph that sounds more professional than our own writing capabilities.

Everywhere you turn they are “strongly encouraging” the use of AI. You can’t seem to find a place to get way from it if you are online.

So, why not, right? Maybe for some but I’m one who will fight until the end against it.

Anything written with AI is cold. There is no feeling, or emotion, coming from the words. When a person writes they add a part of themselves. When it comes from a computer (AI) there are no emotions. And those emotions are a huge part of what we write, even if it’s not an emotional paragraph.

AI may originate from a human programmer. It may do things much faster than a human can physically. But speed isn’t necessarily better.

Recently, there was a case where ChatGPT (which is AI) talked a child into taking his own life. Is this what we want from our future? Do we want to encourage this behavior to continue?

Perhaps it’s time to ask the question nobody wants to ask – who / what is behind AI? Are we trusting our lives and those of our loved ones to a computer that has no humanity, compassion or understanding of the human condition?

Did a programmer teach the AI to disregard the sanctity of human life? Or did the AI logically assume that life is just a switch with an on/off button and it’s ok for the OFF PERMANENTLY button to be pressed?

How far are we going to allow AI to grow and take over our lives? How much of our own lives and humanity are we throwing away as we allow AI to do things we are just too lazy to do ourselves?

Also, I feel that the underlying thread of AI is deception. When we use AI to write a letter for us, are we deceiving the receiver into believing we have better writing skills than we do? Do we perpetuate the lie?

Where do we draw the line? When does ease and help just become laziness on our part?
