George is still alive! For those who saw a previous post called “Please Don’t Kill George!” I am happy to report that so far George is still alive. Cookie has not hurt him yet, but not for lack of desire! If Cookie could sink her teeth into George she would happily do so. Then she would vigorously shake him like she does with the huge stuffed raccoon toy we call “The Beast”.
Cookie’s a lover for the most part. She is the first one to jump up into your lap and give you puppy kisses. She does well with other dogs most of the time. But she is also extremely possessive and protective and does not seem to like other animal species around us.
George has warmed us to us and allows us to pet him now. He purrs. (There is nothing more calming and soothing than the contented purring of a happy kitty.) Cookie is very jealous of any attention we give to George. She sees him as a rival.
George has not done much to endear himself to Cookie either. He teases her from atop the four-wheeler where he likes to perch. When she props herself up trying to get a better sniff of him, he stays just out of reach and bats at her with a friendly paw. He wants to play. She doesn’t seem to see things the same way.
George is still wary of Cookie. He has every right to be nervous. Cats and dogs generally aren’t intended to be friends. They are each doing what comes naturally, following their instinct.
Perhaps there’s a lesson we can learn from George and Cookie. The key to survival is to trust your natural instinct. Some call it that old “gut feeling”. Others may refer to it as a sixth sense. Whatever name you give it, it is worth heeding what it tells you.
In my own experience every time I ignore what instinct told me I suffered dire consequences. As an empath I find there are times when I “just know” things. These little tidbits often manifest as a thought combined with a feeling in my stomach. If it’s butterflies in my stomach it signifies a pleasant or happy thing. If it’s an awful hollowness or a sense that my stomach dropped out it’s trouble.
Maybe George feels that same “gut instinct” around Cookie. Maybe it’s that little feeling that tells him not to trust her. I hope in time, though, they will come to accept and like each other.
Please, relate your own experiences with your inner knowing, your sixth sense and how it affected your life in some way.
