If you knew you were dying what would you do differently? Would you change the way you think? Would you see the world through different eyes? If tomorrow the doctor told you that you have an incurable fatal disease that progresses very quickly, what would you change about your daily lifestyle?
Life itself is a fatal disease. We all suffer from it. Every day we are one day closer to an impending death. How do you stop the inevitable end? You can’t.
How many of us amble on through our day to day lives without ever considering that this day may be our last day? Unexpected things can happen to us ending our lives on short notice. The current world we live in is very volatile. Violence breaks out without warning. People leave for work in the morning and never come home at night.
If you knew you would leave for work this morning and not be able to return home would your morning routine change? Would you kiss your spouse a little longer? Would you hold your children a little tighter? How about your pets and your plants? What plans would you make for them?
Life is unpredictable. This very minute might be your last. Heart attacks can be fatal. Strokes can too. They come on with no warning. In an instant you can be gone. Are your end-of-life plans in order and up to date?
I know this all sounds morbid. I do not intend it to be. However, I do hope it is a wake up call. My best friend has sarcoidosis, which IS a fatal disease. There is no cure. There is only suffering, existing, sustaining a body that is fighting back in all kinds of unpleasant ways.
Her illness has changed the way I look at life myself. The carelessness of youth is gone. I appreciate my loved ones a lot more, recognizing that this conversation may be the last one we ever have. How often do you say “I love you”?
You or your loved ones may be gone tomorrow, next week, or next year. What will you do differently?
