Do you find yourself feeling more depressed and upset and angrier than normal? Does this happen to you more often when you watch the news media? Are things looking so bleak you don’t want to live anymore?
You aren’t alone. More and more I’ve seen evidence of this in those around me. The world picture looks so bleak and unhappy. The major news stations paint the picture of darkness and despair. There is no balance. They don’t share happy news, feel-good news, POSITIVE news.
It seems our news media loves to feed us with all the negative news. They thrive on telling us about murders, and robberies, and accidents. Instead of just giving us the basic facts, they add in a lot of emotional adjectives to make it even more intense and more real. And more painful if you are an empath.
I’ve stopped watching the news and listening to it on the radio. I turn it off, or if my husband wants to watch it I walk out of the room. I don’t want to poison my head with their negative view of the world.
The media paints a picture of a world filled with dark shadows and demons. There is never a big story about miracles and good will, although those events happen just as often. They just don’t make headlines anymore.
Imagine a world with no internet, no television and no radio. Imagine there is no way to instantly communicate with anyone beyond your immediate home area. What would your news be then? What was the news before the inventions of the radio and television? Newspapers could share the news, but it wasn’t “hot” and “breaking”. It wasn’t immediate by the time you read it in the paper.
When you keep your circle small, is it important to you what happens three states over? If a bank was robbed 500 miles away does it affect you? If a train hits a truck on the tracks in another state, would there be a reason for you to know about it?
People want to know why our world is as messed up as it is. It is my firm belief that the power of media has had a lot to do with that. People stopped sweeping in front of their own doorsteps because they are too busy criticizing others’ yards miles away in a different state. They lost track of things in the local area because there is bigger things happening somewhere else.
Can you turn off the news? Are you willing to change your focus to things closer to home, things you have a better opportunity to do something about? Here is my challenge to you: For just two months, 60 days, turn off all news media. Better yet, turn off as many electronic devices as you can. Pay more attention to the local happenings in your area.
Without the nightly news or the morning update, there will be more time in your day. Go out and get to know the real people around you, your neighbors. Try out that local fish fry on Friday night and talk to the ladies serving it. Listen to what they have to say. Get a list of current local events and make a point to attend a couple each week.
It is my belief that you will begin to see a brighter view of the world. You will see who real people are, and how many more there are than you thought. The world isn’t all bad. It’s just painted that way. Can you find a way to scrape off the black paint to see the vivid colors beneath it? Can you wipe the scales of the media off your eyes and see the world as it really is?
Once your eyes are opened, once you see, you will want to share the brightness with the world. Do your part to share this with others. Be the light in the darkness. Keep the world positive by sharing only postive.
What else can we all do to turn this world around?
