In about a week it will be Christmas. Are you ready for it? Have you made a Christmas wish? Perhaps it depends upon what Christmas means to you.
Many people love Christmas and all that it brings: Extra love and generosity shown to those who are in need; A feeling of expectation; Once a year greetings from people we barely stay in touch with; Being remembered, if only for just a short while, Lights and decorations.
Others see the other side of the holiday season: Shopping, Crowds, Selfishness, Financial difficulties, Anxiety, Loneliness, Depression.
Our view of Christmas may have a lot to do with our current life situation. If we have lost special people during the last few years, it may be a lonesome holiday. We may spend it remembering those we wish could be there. If we have recently found someone new to share the holiday season with, it might be a great season filled with new expectations.
Furthermore, if we are in financial difficulties, Christmas may feel bittersweet. No matter how much we would love to give great gifts to all whom we love, we may not be in a financial situation that allows it.
In recent years, it seems there are so many reasons not to appreciate the holiday season and all that it brings. Peace on earth is an impossible dream. Giving lavish gifts to those we love is impossible for the majority of people. Even giving small gifts can be a challenge. Shopping has become more of a chore than a pleasure.
Christmas doesn’t have to be this way. So many people need the love and friendship of others at this time. None of us are alone in the need for love and companionship.
We can all help make someone’s Christmas better, and it doesn’t have to cost us anything if we can’t afford it. A kind word to a stranger, holding the door open for someone with a handful of packages, letting that driver in when you can see it will be a long wait for them, or even a phone call to someone we haven’t spoken with in a long time.
My Christmas wish this year is to see more random acts of kindness. I would love to see this not only during the holiday season, but throughout this coming year. Before doing or saying (or typing) anything, ask how it would feel if you were the recipient. Would you like it? Or would it upset you? Let that be your deciding factor.
Peace on earth may seem impossible but is always the ultimate Christmas wish. We may not be able to bring peace to the whole world, but we can help bring peace and love to our own corner of the world.
Think how much we could change the world if everyone who reads this looks for ways to share peace and love with others. Your kindness may start a chain reaction of love and sharing.
Will you make my Christmas wish yours as well?
