It annoys me when I hear someone say he or she can’t write. Anyone can write. We begin in the early years of school. With pencils in hand, we put marks on paper that turn into words and call this writing.
All through our youth writing is a fundamental part of our school years. Teachers assign book reports and term papers every year. To pass each grade the ability to write is a necessity. Graduation is near impossible unless the student finds a way to cheat.
Therefore, most people know how to write. They can put words on paper with proper utensils. Or they can type them into a word processor on a computer. That is the physical act of writing.
However, creative writing is what they are complaining they cannot do. Anyone can put a few words together in a sentence. It takes work to put them together well.
Some will say it is a gift and a talent. As for me, I don’t feel it is either one. I believe anyone can write well. Creative writing comes from the heart. It just needs to be lit with the right match.
For instance, the articles I have written that have received the most compliments were the ones written with fire in my heart. To write them was easy. The words flowed from my fingers as I wrote them because I was writing directly from my emotions.
If there are any gifts or talents connected with writing, they come in the ability to write from the heart. A well-studied writer can write grammatically correct. He can put words together to get his point across quickly and easily. But a gifted writer can make the reader feel what he is feeling.
These writers stand out even in the younger years of their life. In school, the teachers will be quick to point out the students who will excel in writing and communication skills. Or perhaps the students show a talent for storytelling and poetry.
Even an average writer can learn to write from the heart. It may take a little extra time and effort if he doesn’t begin with the fire inside. But anyone can write if he has a need or a desire.
Good writing is anything but impossible. All it takes is the tools of the craft and a burning desire to speak your mind.
