2019 is here! It’s a new year and another chance for a new you. The energy of the new year is always full of hope, anticipation, and ambition. We believe we can do anything we have a mind to do. Writing resolutions is fun! Optimistically we are certain THIS is the year we will achieve what we desire. Let’s set some goals!
I fell into the same trap many times over. In the first week of the year, I sat down with paper and pen and planned out what I wanted to accomplish this year. Weight loss, financial stability and more time for myself made every list. Every year I was hopeful I would be able to achieve these goals.
Every year I failed before March. By the third month of the year, I had lost the ambition and belief in myself. No matter how many times I tried to find new ways to stay on track, I continuously rose and fell like a roller coaster. Two good days followed three failed days. How would I ever achieve a goal this way?
Is It Worth Setting Goals?
I’m not stupid. I can learn from past experiences, and this was one case when I could see the writing on the wall. There was no sense in setting myself up for failure by making a goal I couldn’t complete. I quit writing resolutions for the new year. There. Problem solved.
Except, it was the wrong solution. I took the lazy way out and gave up. Afraid of disappointing myself, I refused to set goals. The desired outcomes were still on my bucket list. Now, all I had to do was figure out how to accomplish the goals.
2019 Might Be The Year
There is a part of me that wants to say the same thing this year. I’m still afraid of being a disappointment to myself. The possibility is there. Weight loss is a necessary goal. Can I set it and see it through? Or will I lose momentum after the initial energy is gone?
Financial stability may always be a goal. I don’t think anyone ever feels fully stable financially. But, there must be something I can do to bring me more confidence in my financial situation.
This year, there is a better chance of having time for myself. That is one goal I won’t need to set. However, I do want to make that time for myself more productive as well as relaxing.
I don’t want to take the lazy way out. This year, I want to set goals, but I also want to achieve them. I want to feel the motivation all through the year. Will this be the year?
Happy New Year!
